The Gulf Crisis TV Project
In the buildup to the 1991 Gulf War, a real war that was at the same time a militarized mass media spectacle, a group of producers from Deep Dish TV Network and Paper Tiger TV Collective began a series to fight the rampant militarism that seemed to be leading to war. As the war ensued, this series became the only voice of media dissent, documenting the thousands who marched in protest and the many organizations who actively worked to stop it.
This series of 10 programs incorporated footage from hundreds of producers in the U.S. and abroad in a media campaign that collaborated with peace activists and war resisters. It aired nationally on PBS, Chan 4 UK, and in Australia and Canada. Festivals included Arz Electronica, Linz, Austria, 1992; Whitney Biennial, 1993; and the Margaret Mead Festival, 1997.
Produced by Cathy Scott, Marty Lucas, Simin Farkondeh, DeeDee Halleck, Abdul Wahid Cush, Jen Lion, Claudia Demegret, Ludger Balant, Yanni Damianos, Chris Hoover, Indu Krishnan, Victoria Maldonado, CheChé Martinez, Amy Melnick, Ilona Merber, Dawn Suggs, Fiona Boneham, Maggie Smith and many others.
